MAN CONVICTED OF MURDER IN 14-YEAR-OLD TAMIA SANDERS’ DEATH

State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that Bryan Goggins Jr., of Jacksonville, was found guilty by a jury of Second-Degree Murder, three counts of Attempted Second-Degree Murder, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Goggins now faces a maximum of life in Florida State Prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled to be set by the Honorable Bruce Anderson Jr. the week of Dec. 9, 2019.

On Aug. 12, 2016, Goggins’ mother called him to West 38th St. because she had been arguing with someone. When Goggins arrived, a family sitting outside would not tell him where the person was, leading him to pull out a firearm and begin shooting. One of the bullets struck 14-year-old Tamia Sanders in the head, killing her instantly. Goggins’ gunfire also struck three other victims. During the investigation, a controlled call was conducted with Goggins and his mother. During that call, Goggins made several incriminatory statements — including stating,  in response to a question about the 14-year-old dying, that  he did not know who was standing in front of him at the time of the shooting. Two of the surviving victims positively identified Goggins as well.

The case was investigated by Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and is being prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Ashley Terry and Cameron French.
