PORTILLO-FUENTES SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS IN DEATH OF NCSO DEPUTY

State Attorney Melissa Nelson announces that Francisco Portillo-Fuentes, was found guilty by a jury of Aggravated Manslaughter in the 2016 death of Nassau County Deputy Eric Oliver. The Honorable James Daniel sentenced Portillo-Fuentes to 12 years in Florida State Prison at an Oct. 22, 2021, sentencing hearing.

On the morning of Nov. 22, 2016, members of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection initiated questioning of six men in a pickup truck at a Yulee gas station. It was determined several men were not legally in the U.S. and, as agents arrested those men, Portillo-Fuentes exited the truck, fled on foot, and crossed State Road 200 during morning traffic. Oliver and another officer pursued Portillo-Fuentes on foot. While crossing State Road 200, Oliver was struck and killed by a vehicle. Portillo-Fuentes was arrested later that evening at a self-storage facility following a multiagency manhunt.

The case was investigated by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorney Stephen Siegel.
